Love at first sight...or not

Movies always show moms falling in love at first sight with their babies once they've been born. This is not always the case, and we all have our own stories and journeys that we should be proud of sharing, rather then feeling guilty for not "experiencing the norm".

I actually think my first day with Sawyer was quite humorous when I think back to it. You see, I really thought the doctor was going to deliver the baby, wrap him up quickly, pass him into my arms and say "congratulations Charlotte...you just gave birth to a beautiful boy"; this so was not the case! Our first encounter together was not this magical moment or absolute love at first sight. I was in such a place of focus (trying to push out this nugget and make it through the pain), that I didn't have anytime to get out of that head space and prepare for the big introduction. My doctor cheeringly hucked the baby on my chest so quickly that it completely caught me off guard. My mom said that I looked like a deer caught in head lights, staring at this little being in total shock. Yes, I thought he was amazing and divine; but in all honesty, I couldn't connect to the fact that this new baby was mine and had been inside of me for the previous 9 months. I remember just looking at this little being, waiting for this big momentous love to erupt, but still nothing. There was a small part of me that thought it was weird or that something might be wrong.
Once the entire day was done and all my visitors/nurses left me alone for the night; I remember waking up for our first feed. It was at this moment, when all was silent and we were alone that I fell in love with my baby and the full connection was felt. All the crazy hormones, adrenaline, out-of-body focus, and pressure had finally passed; I was able to be still, be present and connect with this beautiful gift.

There is no norm, just experiences. They are all different, special and come when it's the right time for both mom and baby.

My top ten must list for any new moms

Looking back at the all the items I purchased for Sawyer, I have come up with an essential list of things that I loved using from 0-8months (this list does not include the obvious...diapers, wipes, car seat...). These also make great baby gifts too!

1) Bebe au lait (nursery apron)...best item to have when nursing in public; can also serve as a blanket and wipe if you're really stuck. http://www.snugglebugz.ca/avignon-bebe-au-lait-nursing-cover.html

2) I love the 3 pack George onesie's from Walmart (snaps up instead of pulling them over their head). Sawyer has worn them ever since he was born. They are 3 for 10$, they are cotton and wash really well (they are often on sale too).

3) Munchkin travel diaper/wipe/change pad combo...1 place for everything and amazing when you only want to take it instead of your entire diaper bag around. You can find this at walmart too.

4) Gripe water...great in the frost 3 months if your baby has any tummy problems

5) Padraig baby shoes...1 pair will last at least for 1 year...they are warm and stay on really well. https://www.mountainbaby.com/product-Padraig_Wool_Slippers_Baby_3.html

6) Sophie the Giraffe...light, squeaky, overall an amazing teething toy that Sawyer loves to play with.

7) Love my Medella Swing Pump (if breastfeeding is the way you're going). Easy to travel with and easy to clean/use. Battery or plug in powered.

8) "The Daphne" baby bath lounger...Sawyer still uses this. I started by putting it in the small bath tub and know I use it in the big tub. it allows him to lounge without having to hold him up. http://www.snugglebugz.ca/daphne-bath-seat-white.html

9) Diaper Genie...really worth it...works well for separating dirty diapers from the rest of the house. It also contains the smell.

10) Ergo baby carrier...multi postion, holds your baby close to your heart when they are small and you can buy an infant insert for when they are small.

If you have any favourites...make comments below and share why you love them.
